Sporting 50 in Helen, GA: A Trip Worth Doing Hundreds of Times
Helen lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern Georgia, nestled near Unicoi Lake and Anna Ruby Falls. This charming Bavarian-themed town offers a unique traveling experience and is a hidden treasure worth considering for your next outing.
A Little History
The Bavarian theme that attracts many to Helen, GA was not a result of the early settlers of the area. In the late 1960s, the town’s leadership embarked on a purposeful marketing experiment. Three local businessmen sought the help of artist John Kollock, who was reminded of Bavarian communities during his time stationed in Germany. After several meals and sketches, the idea was crafted and slowly implemented. Over time, as people familiar with or having ties to the Bavarian culture settled into the area, Helen truly embraced the vision John had imagined.
Explore the History Locally
The Helen Arts & Heritage Center offers a wonderful short film that outlines the town’s history, early settlers, and provides more details about the beginnings of its Bavarian theme. The center also showcases a variety of art contributed by local volunteers, along with other displays highlighting the town’s history.
Water Runs Through It
An eye-catching feature of Helen is the Chattahoochee River, which cuts through the entrance of the town. We had the pleasure of enjoying an afternoon at The Troll Tavern and Restaurant, savoring a pretzel and beer while marveling at the river’s views. For dinner, we visited Paul’s Steakhouse, where we had a seat offering amazing views of the river. The presence of the river added to the charm, with birds grabbing a drink, anglers trying their luck, and kids tossing coins for luck. The water tumbling across the landscape created enchanting music, enhancing our visit.
The Food Isn’t Bad Either
One challenge we encountered during our brief visit to Helen, GA was the abundance of enticing food options. From pastry shops to candy shops and restaurants, the aromas and displays tempted us to try everything.
During our time there, we visited several different places. At The Troll Tavern, we enjoyed some great local IPAs that were good and cold, accompanied by a delicious pretzel with beer cheese. Paul’s Steakhouse was also noteworthy, evoking memories of the ideal steakhouse from my childhood. The perfectly charbroiled steaks prepared on well-seasoned racks, and the piping hot baked potatoes made for a delightful meal. Trout enthusiasts would appreciate their well-cooked rainbow trout fillet as well.
For breakfast, we tried Dottie’s Kitchen, known for its famous “cathead” biscuit. It’s a cafeteria-style eatery with short-order options, so don’t be surprised. While the food was okay, we stuck to scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, and bacon. I must say, the biscuit was as large as a catfish’s head.
However, the standout for us was Hofer’s Bakery and Café. Despite the line, breakfast was well worth the wait. The line takes you through a charming little general store and bakery, providing plenty to see while waiting, although it does get a bit cramped. The display case was filled with fresh pastries, cakes, and breads, leaving us eagerly anticipating our meal. The food did not disappoint, making the wait completely worthwhile.
Hidden Treasures
Helen is brimming with hidden treasures to discover. Love Locks cover the fence beneath S Main St, leading to and from The Troll Tavern. Thousands of locks, left by visitors wanting to forever commemorate a bond with a group or individual, adorn the fence.
A minor attraction is Willie the Wildewood Bear, a huge wooden bear with a welcoming lap, inviting visitors to take pictures and create lasting memories.
Shops offering unique gifts and crafts are scattered throughout Helen. Many of these stores feature items that are exclusive to Helen, GA or showcase Bavarian culture.
Exploring Natural Wonders
Helen, GA is not only known for its charming town but also for its natural beauty. From the meandering Chattahoochee River to the picturesque mountain lakes, streams, and waterfalls that dot the landscape, there is much to discover.
Unicoi Lake is a must-visit spot. Although we didn’t bring our RV on this trip, we scouted the Unicoi State Park Campground for future visits. The facilities looked great, with easy access in and out. The lake offers a plethora of activities, including fishing, camping, hiking, and even kayak rentals. During the cooler seasons, you can also enjoy trout fishing in the lake and the surrounding streams.
Another natural wonder we explored was Anna Ruby Falls. The trail to the falls is a bit of a walk, uphill, but fear not—it’s paved and wheelchair accessible. The trail follows Smith Creek, sandwiched between two steep mountains. As you venture closer to the base of the falls, you’ll be treated to mesmerizing sights and sounds of the rushing water. The well-constructed overlooks at the base provide ample photo opportunities, capturing the beauty of the falls. Mother Nature’s power and authority are on full display here, as the water cascades from the top of the cliff, creating a spectacular show of force that can be felt in the air and vibrations beneath your feet.
Conclusion
Our trip to Helen, GA was nothing short of fantastic. It provided us with the perfect opportunity to relax and decompress in the mountains while enjoying a host of activities.
